Ukraine insists on full confiscation of frozen russian assets and their allocation to reconstruction: Prime Minister

The Fourth Ukraine Recovery Conference is underway in Rome. During the event, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasised the shared strategic goal with the EU: to rebuild and modernise Ukraine, address the consequences of the war, and ensure prosperity for Ukrainian and EU citizens.

“This conference is a testament to our unity. I am convinced that this unity will endure. It must also manifest in joint actions, particularly in continuing pressure on russia. The aggressor must be deprived of resources to wage war,” the Head of Government stressed.

He noted that the sanctions imposed on russia were yielding results but were insufficient. According to Denys Shmyhal, sanctions pressure must be intensified, particularly targeting the energy and banking sectors, the “shadow fleet,” and introducing secondary sanctions.

“We continue to insist on the full confiscation of frozen russian state assets. These funds must be directed towards Ukraine’s reconstruction. This would be just and effective. russia must pay for its crimes,” the Prime Minister stated.

He acknowledged the support and solidarity of Ukraine’s partners during challenging times.

“We greatly value the unwavering commitment of every ally. We thank the leaders and people of the G7 and EU countries. Special thanks go to the United States, the U.S. President, and Congress for their bipartisan support,” Denys Shmyhal noted, expressing confidence in continued joint efforts towards a just peace and effective recovery.
