Prime Minister of Ukraine discusses sanctions against russia and cooperation with U.S. Senate delegation

On May 30, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with a bipartisan U.S. Senate delegation led by Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham to discuss extending sanctions pressure on russia and issues of bilateral cooperation. The event also featured First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yuliia Svyrydenko and Minister of Finance Sergii Marchenko.

The Head of the Ukrainian Government expressed gratitude for the introduction of a bill to strengthen sanctions against the russian federation.

“It is necessary to weaken russia's ability to wage war by imposing severe restrictions,” Denys Shmyhal emphasized.

He informed the Senate representatives about the russian attacks on peaceful cities and civilians, expressing hope for a decisive response of the United States and the international community to these crimes.

An important topic of the meeting was the continued support of our country by the United States. Denys Shmyhal outlined the key financial and defense needs of Ukraine to the American side.

The parties paid special attention to the confiscation of frozen russian assets.

"The role of the United States in this matter is particularly important, particularly at the G7 level. This is an effective tool to put pressure on russia, as well as a significant resource to compensate for the damage caused to Ukraine," the Prime Minister said.

He also highlighted Ukraine's interest in strengthening economic cooperation with the United States, in particular within the framework of the signed agreement on an investment fund.

Denys Shmyhal noted that during the visit to Washington, the Government delegation discussed with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent the creation of a free trade zone between the two countries and Ukraine was prepared to work actively in this direction.
