Ukraine and EU demonstrate unwavering solidarity on Europe Day, says Denys Shmyhal
Ukraine and its European allies remain united in the face of today’s complex challenges, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal emphasised during a joint press briefing with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
The Prime Minister underscored that, on Europe Day, partners showcased steadfast solidarity with Ukraine, noting that significant events took place, reinforcing the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the European Union. These included: a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, the signing of an agreement to channel funds from russian assets to support Ukraine’s defence, and a meeting of the Coalition of States to establish a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine.
“Today, Ukraine and Europe have taken a step closer to one another. We feel the alignment of our interests, we understand the shared nature of our ambitions, and the inseparability of our future,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.
The Prime Minister also highlighted that EU assistance bolstered Ukraine’s economic stability and strengthened its defence capabilities.
“Ukraine greatly values the EU’s military support, totalling approximately EUR 50 billion, and welcomes new European defence initiatives: the intention to supply 2 million artillery shells to Ukraine, the ReArm Europe plan, and the SAFE instrument,” Denys Shmyhal said.
He noted that, in addition to military aid, Ukraine had received EUR 50 billion in budgetary support, and the European Union had already implemented 16 sanctions packages against russia.
Denys Shmyhal stressed the importance of opening EU accession negotiations across all six core clusters this year. He emphasised that Ukraine was making every effort to join the EU immediately after the war ends.
“Ukraine seeks a lasting, just peace. And this is only possible with Ukraine’s membership in the European Union,” the Prime Minister concluded.
