Military support and tougher sanctions against russia – key topics of Denys Shmyhal’s meeting with Kaja Kallas

On 9 May in Lviv, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

The parties discussed a range of pressing issues, including the situation at the frontline and defence needs. The Head of Ukrainian Government stressed the importance of initiatives to allocate EUR 1 billion for Ukraine’s defence industry and to increase military support for Ukraine in 2025.

“We expect that provisions for the new SAFE instrument will be approved soon. This will enable Ukraine to participate in joint procurement of necessary defence products alongside EU member states, both on the European market and directly from Ukrainian manufacturers,” the Prime Minister noted.

The discussion between Denys Shmyhal and Kaja Kallas also covered sanctions policy towards the russian federation.

“We hope the 17th sanctions package will be agreed and approved by European countries as soon as possible. We must intensify pressure on the aggressor to force it towards peace,” the Head of Government emphasised, adding that Ukraine also anticipated further progress on the confiscation of frozen russian assets and their allocation to Ukraine’s needs.
