Prime Ministers of Ukraine and Belgium discuss joint projects in defence and healthcare

On 10 April, a meeting took place between the Prime Ministers of Ukraine and Belgium, Denys Shmyhal and Bart De Wever.

The two sides discussed the implementation of agreements reached earlier in Kyiv between the President of Ukraine and the Belgian Prime Minister regarding cooperation between the defence companies of both countries and the expansion of joint production.

“The implementation of these initiatives creates the basis for a long-term strategic partnership and opens up new opportunities for innovation, exchange of experience and integration of Ukraine into the European industry,” said Denys Shmyhal.

In addition, the Prime Ministers paid attention to the development of the healthcare sector. The Head of Ukrainian Government noted that during the working visit of the government team to Brussels, a number of documents were signed to strengthen and develop this sector. In particular, a technical agreement was signed with the Belgian Federal Public Service for Health. The document provides for assistance to war victims, rehabilitation and restoration of medical infrastructure.

“Belgium has provided medical aid to Ukraine worth more than UAH 36 million and accepts Ukrainians for treatment and rehabilitation under the MEDEVAC programme. During our visit, the government teams of the countries agreed to expand the programme,” said Denys Shmyhal.

The meeting also addressed the importance of maintaining and extending sanctions against russia, as well as the confiscation of frozen russian assets, which could be directed towards reconstruction efforts.

The Prime Ministers also discussed Ukraine’s European integration aspirations, the progress achieved on this path, and further steps to realise these goals. Denys Shmyhal stressed Ukraine’s efforts in reforming its institutions and aligning its legislation with EU standards.
