Our goal is to confiscate all frozen assets, which will become the main source of reconstruction: Denys Shmyhal at meeting with Valdis Dombrovskis
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and EU Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis discussed European integration and the continuation of the sanctions policy against russia. The meeting took place on 20 March in Kyiv.
The parties focused on financial support for Ukraine. In particular, the Head of Government thanked for the EUR 1 billion tranche from the EU received today.
According to Denys Shmyhal, the EU’s leadership in the ERA initiative, a mechanism for using the proceeds of frozen russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine, is very important for the country. The funds that Ukraine receives under this initiative are already being used for defence needs and important budget expenditures.
“Our main goal is to confiscate all frozen assets, which will become the main source for the country’s reconstruction. This year, the Government is focusing on creating a mechanism for confiscation,” the Prime Minister said.
The parties also discussed the strengthening of economic cooperation and European integration. According to Denys Shmyhal, the process of screening the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with EU law is currently underway.
“Ukraine has successfully implemented all the necessary measures to advance the European integration process. We are actively working to open all six clusters as part of the negotiation process with the EU. This is a key priority,” he stressed.
The discussion also focused on the sanctions policy towards russia. The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of this effective tool and expressed hope that the restrictions would be extended and strengthened.
For his part, Valdis Dombrovskis assured of further support for Ukraine. According to him, the European Commission yesterday proposed a EUR 150 billion SAFE initiative, under which the Ukrainian defence industry would be involved on an equal footing with the defence industries of EU member states.
