Defence and energy on the agenda of Denys Shmyhal’s meeting with David Lammy
On 11 September, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal met with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy.
The parties discussed a number of important issues in the defence and energy sectors.
Denys Shmyhal thanked for the new package of military support, with the UK last week announcing the supply of air defence missiles worth GBP 162 million.
David Lammy, for his part, stressed that the UK would continue to provide military support to the tune of GBP 3 billion a year for as long as necessary.
During the meeting, Denys Shmyhal stressed that Ukraine expected the UK to allow long-range weapons to strike military targets on enemy territory. The issue of providing Ukraine with air defence systems was also raised.
The parties also discussed the situation in the energy sector and the necessary assistance that Ukraine’s allies could provide.
“With the support of our partners, we are restoring what was destroyed by russia and developing decentralised power generation. The UK is helping in this regard,” said Denys Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister also raised the issue of using frozen russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine. He referred to the USD 50 billion in profits from frozen russian assets that the G7 is set to transfer to Ukraine: “We expect to receive the funds by the end of this year.”
Denys Shmyhal expressed his gratitude to the UK Government and the British people for their strong and unwavering support for Ukraine.
