The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko held a working meeting with the Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen

First of all, the First Vice Speaker expressed his gratitude for the personal leadership of the Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, in promoting and supporting numerous resolutions of the Seimas in support of Ukraine.

“There is not a single area in which Ukraine does not feel Lithuania's determination and assistance in response to our immediate and long-term needs,” Oleksandr Korniienko said.

He also noted the support of the Seimas on Ukraine's path to the European Union and NATO. During the meeting, the First Vice-Speaker also informed his colleague about the steps taken on the European integration track, including legislative ones.

The parties discussed in detail the security situation in Ukraine and on the battlefield. In this regard, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine focused on the urgent military needs, such as air defence systems and ammunition.

The interlocutors also discussed the powerful U4U statement initiated and practically prepared by Žygimantas Pavilionis and the steps to implement it. “For the first time, the idea of Estonia was supported at the multilateral international level and an appeal was made to partners to allocate 0.25% of GDP annually for the defence needs of our country,” the First Vice Speaker said.

In conclusion, Oleksandr Korniienko drew attention to the need to make a decision as soon as possible to use the frozen russian assets for Ukraine's recovery and defence needs.

For her part, the Speaker of the Seimas of Lithuania, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, expressed her condolences over the recent intense shelling of Ukraine by the russian federation. “The support for Ukraine is absolutely unanimous, but we can do more,” she stressed. 

For reference. On 22-23 March, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko is on a working visit to the Republic of Lithuania.

The parliamentary delegation also includes Oleksandr Merezhko, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.
