Fifth and final day of the working visit of the Ukrainian delegation headed by Oleksandr Korniienko: meetings on the sidelines of the 147th IPU Assembly and election of the new President of the organisation

The Ukrainian delegation headed by the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko has completed a working visit to the Republic of Angola, during which it took part in the 147th IPU Assembly.

On the final day of the meeting, Ukrainian delegates held a number of important meetings on the sidelines of the Assembly. The election of the new President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was also held.

Election of the new President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

On Friday, 27 October, during the 147th IPU Assembly, the new President of the organisation was elected. Tulia Ackson, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Tanzania, took office. She replaced her predecessor, Duarte Pacheco, who had been in office for three years. In total, four countries – representatives of Senegal, Tanzania, Somalia and Malawi – were running for the presidency of the organisation.

Oleksandr Korniienko, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, congratulated the new IPU President on her election and wished her inspiring and fruitful work. “We look forward to continuing our communication and cooperation within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,” he said.

Meetings of the Ukrainian delegation with representatives of Indonesia and Tanzania

With the leader of the Indonesian delegation, Fadli Zon, the Ukrainian delegates discussed food security and important actions by the international community, including further support. The First Deputy Speaker informed his counterpart about the current situation and the russian federation’s export obstruction.

“The war has been going on for over nine years. We must end it with a just victory. The occupiers must leave our territory. This will be the beginning of global security,” stressed Oleksandr Korniienko, adding that specific points are contained in the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, which Ukraine is calling for support and implementation. 

The parties also touched upon the issue of strengthening cooperation in certain areas and noted the work of the Friendship Group.

Oleksandr Korniienko stressed that the head of the Indonesian delegation, Fadli Zon, had visited Ukraine seven times, four of them during the full-scale russian invasion.

In addition, Ukrainian delegates met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tanzania. The parties discussed a number of important issues, including food security and the implementation of the President Zelenskyi’s Peace Formula. The Ukrainian delegates stressed the importance of expanding Ukraine’s diplomatic presence in Tanzania, as well as developing agricultural, educational, energy and engineering cooperation.

In general, during the visit, the Ukrainian delegation held a number of important and productive meetings with its IPU colleagues. In particular, the delegation communicated with delegations and representatives of Angola, Brazil, South Africa, the United Kingdom, France, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Malawi, the Republic of Iraq, Kenya, Cape Verde, Cambodia, the Republic of Ghana, Zambia, the ambassadors of the Group of Seven and the President of the Parliament of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries. Separately, our delegation met with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Duarte Pacheco.

In addition, Ukrainian MPs took an active part in the meetings of the Assembly and its committees. In particular, our delegates spoke and participated in debates in the Peace and Security Committee, the Standing Committee on UN Affairs, the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, the Committee on Relations with the United Nations, etc.

The MPs also joined the IPU Young Parliamentarians’ Forum and the IPU Women Parliamentarians’ Forum, which took place within the framework of the Assembly.

On the sidelines of the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Ukrainian delegation presented the exhibition “War in the Voices of Children” and held an additional event – “Life without Borders: Honouring the memory of children lost in war”, aimed at creating a platform for international solidarity and honouring the innocent lives of children affected by armed conflict.

During all meetings with fellow parliamentarians and delegates of the Assembly, the Ukrainian MPs stressed a number of pressing issues, including the implementation of the Peace Formula of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi, food security and awareness of responsibility for it, as well as the current situation in Ukraine – russian missile attacks, their consequences and the crimes committed by the russian federation against the Ukrainian people, including Ukrainian children.

The programme of the visit included participation of the delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine in the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Luanda, the capital of Angola.

The parliamentary delegation also includes: the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Oleksandr Merezhko, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Youth and Sports Zhan Beleniuk, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management Lesia Vasylenko, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Olha Rudenko, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy Oleksandr Sanchenko, and Dmytro Shpenov, the Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legal Policy.
