We count on the active position of the Mexican Congress in condemning the abduction of Ukrainian children by russia and their return home

During her official visit to Mexico, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk met with the Vice President of the Mexican Congress Blanca Maria del Socorro Alcala Ruiz.

The parties discussed the need to end the war in Ukraine and build a sustainable global peace. Olena Kondratiuk expressed her gratitude to Mexico for its support of Ukraine at international platforms, including the UN, and its commitment to the common values of international law.

“I thanked the Vice President and the entire Congress of Mexico for recognising the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of Ukrainians, because it is about historical justice,” said the Vice Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament.

She noted that today russia is deliberately killing Ukrainian citizens, committing genocide of the Ukrainian people and ecocide in Ukraine.

“Our nuclear power plants are being seized and attacked, and russia has also blown up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, causing a large-scale environmental disaster. More than 174,000 square kilometres of Ukraine’s territory have been mined, the size of Uruguay. More than 6 million Ukrainians are forced to flee the war abroad,” emphasised Olena Kondratiuk.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine also informed the Vice President of the Mexican Congress about more than 19,500 Ukrainian children illegally deported by russia.

“These children are being put through filtration and educational camps, forced passportisation and adoption in russia. This is a terrible international crime that should not go unpunished. We are counting on the active position of the Mexican Congress to condemn the abduction of Ukrainian children by russia and the need for their return home,” stressed Olena Kondratiuk.

She also expressed interest in establishing interparliamentary cooperation with Mexico at all levels. The Vice Speaker praised the visit of Mexican parliamentarians to Ukraine in the summer of 2022.

“They were in Irpin and saw with their own eyes what the 'russky mir' is. Later, the Mexican MPs published a special brochure debunking the myths of russian disinformation about the war in Ukraine,” said Olena Kondratiuk. The Deputy Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine took the opportunity to invite the President of the Mexican Congress to visit Ukraine to “personally see all the horrors and catastrophic humanitarian consequences of russian aggression”.

For her part, the Vice President of the Mexican Congress Blanca Maria del Socorro Alcala Ruiz assured that Mexico condemns russian aggression and respects and adheres to the UN Charter. According to her, historically, Mexico understands what the Ukrainian people are going through. She noted that Mexico has been subjected to many invasions and Mexicans know the heavy price of losses in defending their independence.

“Mexico stands in solidarity with Ukraine!” the Vice President of the Congress emphasised.
