Ukraine and Mexico should work together to reform the UN

During her official visit to Mexico, the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Olena Kondratiuk met with the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee of Mexico, Hector Enrique Vasconcelos, an experienced diplomat who has personally supported our country since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of russia.

“Mr Hector will soon become the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations. This is a very important appointment and mission! And it gives confidence in Mexico’s continued unwavering support within the UN of the principled position on the inviolability of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as condemnation of russian aggression,” said Olena Kondratiuk.

During the meeting, she stressed that the aggressor country russia, as a state that violates the UN Charter, has no right to be a member of the UN Security Council. It is also important for Ukraine to ensure that russia will be fairly punished for both the crime of aggression and the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children.

The parties also discussed in detail the need to reform the UN to strengthen its role in global processes. In particular, they discussed the need to revise the veto power in the UN Security Council.

Hector Enrique Vasconcelos agreed that the UN reform is overdue and that changes should start with veto procedures. In addition, to make the organisation more effective, it is necessary to make UN resolutions binding and expand the membership of the Security Council.

“We are convinced that Ukraine and Mexico should work together to achieve this goal,” summed up the results of the meeting Vice Speaker Olena Kondratiuk.
