We must promote the issue of sanctions against the russian nuclear industry
One of the top priorities for Ukrainian diplomats is to tighten sanctions against russia, especially in the nuclear energy sector. This was emphasized by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during a meeting with heads of foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in Zakarpattia region.
The event was held under the slogan "Victory Above All!" under the leadership of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, with the participation of First Lady Olena Zelenska, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba.
According to the Head of Government, the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Switzerland are among the top 5 leaders who have imposed the most sanctions against russia.
"It is crucial to actively promote the issue of sanctions against rosatom. At the first stage - personal sanctions on the company's management, at the second - sanctions on partial supplies of russian nuclear fuel and russian technologies," the Prime Minister emphasized.
Denys Shmyhal added that it was also worth focusing on the introduction of sanctions by countries against russian metallurgy, diamond exports, and the continued reduction of the price ceiling for gas, oil, and refined products.
"And most importantly: maximum sanctions against manufacturers of high-tech chips, microcircuits, equipment used in russian missiles, Iranian drones and other russian military equipment," the Prime Minister emphasized.
The Prime Minister expressed his conviction that this work should be continued both in the countries that supply such high-tech products and in the countries that are intermediaries helping russia or russian companies obtain weapons production kits.
Denys Shmyhal also urged diplomats to focus on the issue of confiscation of frozen russian assets.
"All the russian assets that are blocked today should be the number one priority for the restoration of Ukraine and compensation for the damage caused. It is extremely important to continue developing an international compensation mechanism, which we are all working on today together with the relevant group headed by the Head of the Presidential Office," the Prime Minister said.
The Head of Government thanked Canada, which had been the first to introduce a compensation mechanism at the legislative level, as well as the United States, which had allowed the transfer of proceeds from property confiscated from sanctioned persons to Ukraine. The Prime Minister also praised the Government of Estonia, which was the first among the EU countries to find a legal solution to use russian assets to rebuild Ukraine. He called on Ukrainian diplomats to join the ongoing discussions on this issue at the level of the European Union.
