Ukraine needs security guarantees before joining NATO

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko held a working meeting with the Rasmussen Global CEO Fabrice Pothier.

The parties discussed Ukraine's application for NATO membership in the context of the upcoming Vilnius Summit.

First of all, the First Vice-Speaker stressed the importance of providing security guarantees before Ukraine joins the Alliance: "Partner countries support this step — and for maximum effectiveness, Ukraine advocates working on a fixed document, taking into account the positions of the Kyiv Security Treaty and the most effective agreements in other countries."

"This is necessary to build up Ukraine's military potential to effectively fight for our country and global security in the context of deterring russian aggression," Oleksandr Korniienko said.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the possibility of cooperation between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the parliaments of NATO countries on clear formulations of security guarantees, agreements and concrete steps towards Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration.

"International partners should agree on security guarantees for Ukraine as a temporary measure until Ukraine joins the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation," said Fabrice Pothier, the CEO of Rasmussen Global.
