The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine held conversations with the Speakers of the Parliaments of Slovenia and Romania

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk held videoconference conversations with his colleagues – the Speaker of the Parliament of Slovenia Urska Klakocar Zupancic and the Acting Speaker of the Parliament of Romania Alina Stefania Gorghiu.

The Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament, first of all, thanked his colleagues for the steady and broad support of Ukraine by their countries and peoples throughout the period of russia’s full-scale invasion and emphasized that it is important for our further progress on the European and Euro-Atlantic paths.

In particular, he noted that the NATO summit in Vilnius is approaching, where Ukraine expects a clear timeline for its membership in the Alliance. He also said that in April, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine appealed to all parliaments of the Alliance to adopt resolutions (statements) supporting Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

According to him, such resolutions would demonstrate strong support for Ukraine’s aspirations to become a member of the Alliance as soon as possible. Therefore, Ruslan Stefanchuk called on the parliaments of Slovenia and Romania to adopt such statements in support of Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

“It is extremely important for us to support the Euro-Atlantic path at all levels. This would show your responsible and unwavering position in supporting such aspirations of Ukraine. And it would demonstrate the leading role of parliaments in an important issue for all of us,” the Chairman of the Parliament of Ukraine emphasized.

Separately, the importance of recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people was discussed with the Speaker of Slovenia.

“This is a matter of historical justice, because russia has not changed its approaches and principles. Just like 90 years ago, today it is committing deliberate genocide on Ukrainian land,” Ruslan Stefanchuk emphasized.

The Speaker of the Parliament of Slovenia Urska Klakocar Zupancic, first of all, congratulated Ukraine on obtaining the status of a candidate for EU membership and assured of Slovenia’s further support for Ukraine’s aspirations to become a full-fledged member of the EU and NATO.

“Slovenia is an active member of the EU and a promoter of peace. And, of course, we recognize and know everything that is happening in Ukraine. We are fighting disinformation and spreading the truth about what is happening in Ukraine,” Urska Klakocar Zupancic said.

She also emphasized the strengthening of inter-parliamentary diplomacy, which has recently become an important factor in relations between countries and parliaments. According to her, parliaments are “the representatives of the people and our goal is to deliver truthful messages to the people.”

The Speaker of the Romanian Parliament, Alina ?tefania Gorghiu, also emphasized that Romania supports Ukraine’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and will continue to stand with Ukraine in the fight against russian aggression.

She also reminded that the Romanian Parliament is constantly working on political issues that are important for helping Ukraine, in particular, on recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people and condemning russia’s armed aggression. And this, according to the Speaker, will not change until the Ukrainian people gain peace and victory.
