We see great potential in the development of municipal partnership between Ukraine and Germany

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko held a working meeting with the Special Envoy for Decentralization, Good Governance and Civil Service Georg Milbradt.

The parties discussed issues of decentralization and democratic governance.

“We are grateful for the personal position and support of the decentralization reform – most of the decisions were made thanks to Mr. Milbradt’s help and advice,” the First Vice Speaker emphasized.

At the same time, Oleksandr Korniienko noted that Ukraine has a unique experience of local self-government in the context of war: “This can become our strong point – an example of how to move forward, strengthen local self-government and strengthen cooperation to meet all the challenges that arise on the way, even in the face of a full-scale war.”

He also said that since the liberation of Ukrainian territories in April 2022 and the restoration of governance, the Public Administration Reform Strategy has been promptly updated to take into account all the new wartime challenges.

“A separate issue is the strategy of post-war recovery and reconstruction. We see great potential in the development of municipal partnerships with Germany,” emphasized the First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament, adding that Ukraine highly appreciates the existing partnerships between Ukrainian and German cities, the number of which has almost doubled from 70 to 132. After all, such cooperation is important for the restoration of Ukrainian cities – “from small streets to large infrastructure facilities that have suffered as a result of russian aggression”.

In conclusion, Oleksandr Korniienko emphasized that Ukraine is counting on the participation of Germany and German business in the restoration of Ukraine. He expressed gratitude for the concrete support, in particular, military and humanitarian, as well as for the assistance provided to the Ukrainian people.
