Oleksandr Korniienko met with a member of the New Democratic Party of the House of Commons of Canada

The First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleksandr Korniienko held a working meeting with Heather McPherson, the Member of the New Democratic Party (NDP) in the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Canada.

“Ukraine is grateful for the unwavering support throughout this year and the important personal contributions of Ms. McPherson,” the First Vice Speaker emphasized, thanking the New Democratic Party of the House of Commons for their support.

Oleksandr Korniienko expressed gratitude to Canada for its participation in the ‘tank coalition’ and invited it to join the ranks of the coalition of air support for Ukraine: “We need long-range missiles and fighter jets to bring the victory closer.” In addition, he emphasized that Canada was the first country in the world to adopt legislation in June 2022 that provides for the confiscation of russian assets.

During the meeting, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine briefed Heather McPherson on current events and the current situation in Ukraine: “The enemy does not abandon its intentions and continues to act against a sovereign state.”

He emphasized that continuation and strengthening of political support, provision of weapons and other necessary assistance are important issues for Ukraine.

“We are counting on a long-term plan of support for Ukraine from Canada, increased financial allocations and security guarantees,” said the First Deputy Speaker, adding that a clear and effective mechanism for imposing sanctions and confiscating russian assets is needed to restore Ukraine.

“Every perpetrator must be punished for all the crimes committed. This requires an international special tribunal. All actions against an independent state, against Ukrainians, must be assessed and have consequences,” said Oleksandr Korniienko.

In conclusion, the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine told his colleague about the vector of Ukraine’s movement, including joining the North Atlantic Alliance: “We will be grateful to the Parliament of Canada for supporting Ukraine’s application to join NATO.”

The meeting was also attended by Mykyta Poturaiev, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy.
