Prime Minister of Ukraine and Secretary of U.S. Treasury align on future financial support
Іn 2022, the United States was the leader among all partner countries in terms of financial assistance provided. Starting from February 24, 2022, Ukraine received USD 13 billion in grant support for the budget from the United States. These funds were allocated for healthcare, education, social and humanitarian aid programs. This was stated by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal in a statement to the media following a meeting with Secretary of the Treasury of the United States Janet Yellen.
"This year, Ukraine's budget deficit amounts to about USD 38 billion. The United States has committed to provide Ukraine with more than USD 10 billion by September. In addition, the United States supports Ukraine in its rapid recovery. Namely, they have allocated USD 1.5 billion for this purpose, and another USD 1.1 billion to support the rapid recovery of the energy sector of Ukraine and Moldova," stated Denys Shmyhal.
According to the Prime Minister, an important point of joint work is the creation of a Multi-agency Donor Coordination Platform, which allows for effective coordination of the work of the G7 countries and all international financial organizations, including the IMF and the World Bank, with regard to financial support for Ukraine, as well as other related issues.
Denys Shmyhal and Janet Yellen discussed, among other things, the financial and sanctions impact on the russian budget, including personal sanctions against russian officials as well as sectoral sanctions, such as restrictions on the russian nuclear industry.
"We also discussed the continuation and effectiveness of sanctions on the supply of high-tech items to be used in the military sphere of russia in order to weaken russia's capacity to produce new weapons for the war with Ukraine," the Head of the Ukrainian Government said.
In addition, the parties touched upon the issue of support for Ukraine in terms of war risk insurance for businesses and the confiscation of frozen russian assets.
The Prime Minister thanked Janet Yellen for the visit and for the support provided by the United States to our country.
The U.S. Treasury Secretary, for her part, reiterated the message conveyed by President Joseph Biden that the United States would stand with Ukraine as long as it takes to win.
