Prime Minister of Ukraine and Foreign Minister of Canada discuss economy, recovery and sanctions
During a meeting in Kyiv on February 15, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Mélanie Joly addressed a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues.
"Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion, the Government of Canada has undertaken a number of progressive steps in support of Ukraine, which have become an example for other countries. We appreciate the solidarity of our Canadian friends," said Denys Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister noted that Canada had been among the first countries to make decisions on financial and military support for Ukraine, the confiscation of russian assets and sanctions. During the meeting, Denys Shmyhal underlined the importance of further sanctions pressure on russia, in particular, the inclusion of the russian nuclear industry in the sanctions packages.
The parties also touched upon the issue of restoring energy facilities and housing. Denys Shmyhal thanked Canada for its support in demining, which is a fundamental element of reconstruction. The Government of Ukraine has already established an interagency working group on humanitarian demining, with a center to be set up in the near future.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada Mélanie Joly, for her part, announced an additional CAD 7.5 million for these purposes. Canada's total assistance for demining will reach CAD 22.5 million.
