The Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament sincerely congratulated his colleague on assuming the office and thanked the Latvian parliamentarians for an important visit to Ukraine, which demonstrates strong solidarity with the Ukrainian people in difficult times for us.

«The Saeima of Latvia is one of the first parliaments in the world to support Ukraine at the level of very important political decisions, in particular the recognition of what is happening in Ukraine as the genocide of the Ukrainian people and the recognition of the russian federation as a terrorist state,» Ruslan Stefanchuk said during a joint briefing after the meeting and expressed deep gratitude to the Latvian people for the support that Ukrainians feel in all spheres: military, financial, humanitarian, political and others.

Ruslan Stefanchuk said that during the meeting the parties discussed a number of issues on further cooperation between the two parliaments, in particular in terms of supporting Ukraine on its way to the European Union and NATO; russia’s responsibility for the crime of aggression against Ukraine; the issue of international isolation of russia and strengthening sanctions against the aggressor country, etc.

«We, Ukrainians, see, feel and are very grateful for the contribution that Latvia makes to our common victory. Latvia has always been an ally of Ukraine and demonstrated assistance at all levels. I am confident that further support will only increase, » the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed.

In his turn, the Speaker of the Saeima of the Republic of Latvia Edvards Smiltens expressed admiration for the courageous struggle of Ukrainians against the aggressor and stressed that Latvia was proud of friendship with such a brave and strong people who fought not only for their independence, but also for European democracy.

«Your entire nation is united and determined to win. And it is only a matter of time – victory. Ukrainian flags have been flying everywhere in Riga since February 24, and it is important for us to support you. We feel it, » Edwards Smiltens emphasized.

He also added that russia’s aggression is an attempt to arrogate to itself the right to use force as opposed to the rule of law, and the entire civilized world must do everything to stop this destructive policy.

«We cannot allow the policy of destroying the entire civilization to destroy the human values we stand for and lead to chaos in the world. We must restore the rule of law so that those who commit murder are brought to justice and punished accordingly. That is why we support Ukraine. We wish you courage on this path and are ready to stand with you to the end, » the Speaker of the Latvian Parliament assured Ukrainians during the briefing.
