At the invitation of His Excellency Seymur Mardaliyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Ukraine, I had the honour of attending a commemorative musical evening held at the Kyiv National Academic Operetta Theatre and dedicated to the Day of Remembrance of the Khojaly tragedy.
Among the attendees were representatives of foreign diplomatic missions and members of the public.
The concert programme brought together works by Ukrainian, European, and Azerbaijani composers. The audience heard music by Myroslav Skoryk, Johann Sebastian Bach, Jules Massenet, Sergei Bortkiewicz, Gabriel Fauré, Asaf Zeynalli, Fikret Amirov and others.
The concert featured soloists of the theatre’s orchestra — Ivanna Voroshyliuk (violin), Olena Malynovska (cello), and Liliia Bezhitashvili (piano).
The Khojaly tragedy remains one of the most painful chapters in the history of Azerbaijan. On the night of 25–26 February 1992, the city of Khojaly was subjected to a massive attack that resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
The evening became a dignified tribute to the memory of the victims and an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of solidarity and mutual support between the peoples of Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
