Ukraine and the EU must work together to ensure a just peace and long-term security: Denys Shmyhal
Тhe shared primary objective of Ukraine and the EU remains achieving a just peace and long-term security on the continent. This was emphasised by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal during a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, held in Lviv on 9 May.
“russian aggression has definitively shattered the old notion that Europe and Ukraine follow two separate political paths. Today, we are one, and together we can create a better future for our continent,” the Head of Government stated.
He underscored that Ukraine’s strategic goal was to attain EU membership immediately following the establishment of a just peace. The Prime Minister added that Ukraine’s integration into the EU would ensure security and prosperity for both Ukraine and the EU community.
“We have proven that we are capable not only of defending ourselves but also of constantly evolving. We have not paused reforms. We are a few steps away from fully meeting all our obligations under the Association Agreement and are ready to complete our homework swiftly and responsibly,” Denys Shmyhal stressed.
He also highlighted that Europe was increasingly demonstrating resolve and efficiency, including through the introduction of new sanctions, the implementation of defence initiatives, and the strengthening of unity.
“Our resilience, our ability to adapt, our natural resources, intellectual potential, and battle-hardened army – all of this can and must become a new source of strength for the EU,” the Prime Minister asserted.
He further emphasised that Ukraine valued its partnership with the EU and the support provided.
“We are grateful for the EUR 75 billion in financial, economic, and humanitarian aid. For nearly EUR 50 billion in military support. For every sanctions package against the aggressor, for the freezing of russian sovereign assets, and for using the profits from them to benefit Ukraine,” Denys Shmyhal noted.
