Prime Minister of Ukraine and UK Foreign Secretary discuss cooperation in defence and energy sectors

On 5 February, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal met with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs David Lammy. The parties discussed a number of important issues in the defence and energy sectors.

The discussion focused on strengthening Ukraine’s defence industry.

“Last week, the Government approved a draft law on the ratification of the defence agreement with the UK, and yesterday it was supported by the Verkhovna Rada. This will allow us to receive up to GBP 2 billion for the purchase of air defence systems and missiles for them, as well as for the organisation of repair bases for military equipment and other weapons,” said Denys Shmyhal.

He noted that the implementation of this agreement, as well as the one signed by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the President of Ukraine, were key topics during the meeting with David Lammy. He also expressed Ukraine’s eagerness for swift and close cooperation in this regard.

In addition, the Prime Minister thanked UK partners for announcing a GBP 55 million support package to kick-start the implementation of the 100 Year Partnership with Ukraine.

“Part of the funds will be provided by the UK for the implementation of projects in the energy sector,” the Head of Ukrainian Government stressed. He said that cooperation in this area was also discussed during the meeting.
