Premiere of the Opera “Don Giovanni” at the National Operetta of Ukraine

Having been invited to attend the premiere of the opera “Don Giovanni”, staged with the support of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Ukraine, I received great aesthetic pleasure from what I saw and heard on the stage of the National Operetta of Ukraine.

The original production of “Don Giovanni”, presented in a new stage interpretation, was directed by Stanislav Ivanov — a student of the Director General and Artistic Director of the National Operetta of Ukraine, People’s Artist of Ukraine Bohdan Strutynskyi.

“I was particularly interested in the society surrounding Don Giovanni. It is the society that gives rise to this evil and at the same time tolerates it. It speaks a lot about revenge but acts very little. In fact, this is the world we are living in today. This story clearly shows that society often tolerates evil,” noted Stanislav Ivanov.

For his part, Director General and Artistic Director of the National Operetta of Ukraine, People’s Artist of Ukraine Bohdan Strutynskyi emphasized:
“This opera raises important questions about freedom and responsibility, the nature of evil, social complicity, and the mechanisms of justification. Don Giovanni is not merely a character but also a model of behaviour that society either stops or allows to continue. For our theatre, this production is a step toward a serious dialogue with the audience. We are not simply reproducing Mozart — we are offering a contemporary perspective on moral choice, the price of indifference, and the responsibility of each individual.”
