On 9 July 1816, the Congress of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, convened in the historic city of San Miguel de Tucumán, officially declared independence from the Spanish Empire. This landmark event marked the birth of an independent Argentine state. In 1826, the country adopted its present official name — the Argentine Republic.
